Choosing the Right Content Management System

Jen Hill

A WordPress vs Drupal Comparison

A question we get all the time is, what is the best Content Management System? Or, which is better Drupal or WordPress? While we all have our standard technology preferences, our jobs as technical advisors is to step back and really take a look at which application will meet your goals the best. Depending on what you need your website and CMS to accomplish, either may be a great fit for your project. Below are some top level features we first consider.

Drupal versus WordPress securityDrupal’s enterprise-level security is one of its key benefits. Drupal’s security relies upon a strong, coordinated effort. Core and contributed Modules are passed through a series of protocols by a dedicated security team responsible for handling issues. With its rigorous coding standards, Drupal’s tools ensure in-depth security practices are followed.

Because of WordPress’s popularity, it is highly targeted by hackers. While there are third-party plugins that can increase the security, a lack of screening the plugins available (by WordPress) in the Free and Premium market is actually part of what makes WordPress vulnerable to hacks. However, that also means there are a lot of people out there doing their best to stay two-steps ahead of those hackers - ourselves included! While free, contributed plugins may sometimes be questionable, WordPress core software is very secure and is audited regularly by thousands of developers. As long as you stay up to date on your release, you are in good shape.

If your site contains a lot of private and sensitive data, you may want to really consider security in your CMS decision.

Predesigned Theme Market

Chances are the majority of the sites you look at today are WordPress - they do hold the top spot on usage for CMSs. Chances also are that many of those sites are built with a pre-designed theme. You may think, “but they don’t all look the same.” That’s because there are literally thousands upon thousands of Wordpress themes available for free download and purchase. Beyond that, with a skilled theme developer, you can adjust the styles of many of these themes somewhat easily. This can afford web projects many efficiencies around design and development and should always be a consideration during a project discovery phase.

While Drupal does offer many template options, in our many-years of experience we find custom is the most efficient and effective way to go.

CMS Winner: WordPress

Responsive Design and Development

Responsive Website DesignWebsite user trends show mobile viewership is higher than ever. For many organizations, mobile design and development are key to their success and as a result, we always plan for optimization. Drupal and WordPress, while they have different ways of implementation, allow for mobile responsive design and development and within the WordPress market, many of the pre-designed themes for sale and download include a mobile theme as well.

CMS Winner: Both

Search Engine Optimization

If your CMS is developed using best standards, there is no particular advantage towards either CMS in regards to Search Engine Optimization.

CMS Winner: Both

User Interface

The user interface of the administrative site of your CMS is something you’ll likely spend a lot of time with; it should be one you’re comfortable using. In our experience, which CMS admin panel you prefer is entirely subjective and dependent on personal preferences. Some swear by Drupal’s top navigation bar and easy ways to edit in-line on the fly, while others prefer WordPress’s media management benefits and dashboard. It’s like whether you prefer a PC or a Mac.

Multilingual website developmentOut of the box, Drupal’s site core allows for multilingual translation options on your website. Utilized by many global sites, including The White House and several UN Government websites, Drupal allows your users to switch languages and you to translate content into multiple languages.

While multilingual capabilities are possible through WordPress plugins, Drupal’s core features really wins this round.

CMS Winner: Drupal

App Development and Systems Integrations

Both CMSs are entirely extendable through the use of Modules (Drupal) and Plugins (WordPress). However, if you are looking for enterprise solutions and complex technology integrations, Drupal has, in general, more robust features. This also ties back into the security features of Drupal. It’s important when integrating sensitive data feeds that the site be as secure as possible.

CMS Winner: Drupal

Website eCommerce solutionsIn the open source market, because of its sheer popularity and hoards of developers designing for it, WordPress’s third party E-Commerce integrations are both scalable and powerful. Through plugins like WooCommerce, WordPress users can manage inventory, shipping and distribution, and payment gateways all within one system. While possible within Drupal, also through third-party contributions, the options are really just better and more plentiful with WordPress.

CMS Winner: WordPress
