Cancer GRACE

Drupal 7 Website Design & Development

The Need

Global Resource for Advancing Cancer Education (GRACE) is a nonprofit organization developed to democratize cutting-edge information on cancer management and provide it directly to patients. The primary medium for communication is their website and its user forums. Their WordPress multi-site reached a point of limitation and risk and was no longer serving the organization's needs. It was time to rethink, rebuild and upgrade the website and the content management system.

What We Did

  • Drupal Design & Development
  • Content Strategy
  • Technology Assessments & Planning
  • Web Design

The Result

A website redesigned and rebuilt in Drupal to better serve the GRACE organization and its constituents now and into the future. A culmination of efforts of multiple teams over the span of a couple years, Fuse developed a robust, extensible, mobile responsive site from the ground up.

About the Project

Global Resource for Advancing Cancer Education (GRACE) is a nonprofit organization that was developed as a means of improving the overall medical care for cancer patients by democratizing cutting edge information on optimal cancer management and providing it directly to patients. The organization sought to greatly improve the usability, design and organization of their website in a current content management technology to serve them now and into the future. In addition to the critical goal of cancer education, the community aspect of the site - the user forums was also a top need.

Beginning with a User Experience study performed in 2016 by Blink, from there we worked on a requirements and analysis discovery in order to determine the best course for updating GRACE's website. GRACE is a large site with a large amount of content - both in its blogs and its user submitted forum topics - and as such took great amounts of planning for information architecture and user experience improvements.

Migrate an Existing WordPress Multisite into a New Drupal CMS

The organization began with cancer education and user forums a decade ago and over time their platform evolved, combining totally separate sites, databases and technologies. Eventually this transformed into a single WordPress multi-site configuration. This multisite was built by developers that were no longer involved and was configured in a manner that made maintenance, change and expansion of the site quite challenging. In addition to figuring out how to migrate important content into a new design and information architecture, we also manually exported content out of the old site and into the new site.

WordPress > Drupal: Managing a large Complex Data Migration

In order to move selected sections and types of content to the new site without a time consuming, manual cut and paste process, we developed custom scripts to export the content out of the WordPress site and into the new Drupal website.

Wrap Up

The GRACE site continues to grow and evolve everyday with the help of its content contributors and forums moderators. With its updated Drupal site, content editors can more easily get cancer information and education to the fingertips of those diagnosed with or affected by cancer.
